Vickie & Faith

Hi there!  We’re so glad that you’ve found us! We are a mother-daughter team here to share tips, stories, insights, and information with you. We are both stay-at -home moms who homeschool their children. If you have kids, we’re pretty sure that you can identify with being a Side Tracked Mom! Life pulls you in one direction and then another and just as you’re headed in one direction…a random thought, a new idea, or an item you just remembered on your to-do list pops into your head and you’re off in another direction!

Throughout our blog you may notice us commenting on each other’s entries. You’ll see a picture of one of our faces next to our interjections.

We hope that you enjoy your time here. This is a new project for us but so far it has been a great opportunity for the two of us to spend time sharing new ideas with each other and we hope it will do the same for you.

Our Multigenerational Household

In April 2010, Faith and her family moved into our home, resulting in a multigenerational household. Because of this, we now have some information about multigenerational living on our site and will share some of what we are learning as we experience life living together.

Faith and I are both stay-at -home moms and we homeschool our children. Faith and Shawn have three children (ages 11, 8, and 3) and Jim and I have the two youngest (of five) Sloderbecks still living at home (ages 17 and 15). Along with our husbands and my mom who has been living with us since 1985, we are four generations living under one roof.

I am blessed to be married to my best friend and high-school sweetheart, Jim for 37 years now. While Jim is busy saving lives in the emergency room and teaching at church, I find myself amidst the flurry of activity that comes with raising and homeschooling our children–a journey full of joys and struggles for the past 20 years. (I’m sure Faith could give you an ear full!)

While Grace is busy enjoying a life of being a gymnast three nights a week, some day she would love to work with dogs. She is passionate about animals and is a great “mom” to her toy poodle Biskit. At 17, Jeremy is excited to be able to drive places on his own, is great with technology, and is presently studying about pursuing a career in woodworking.

While homeschooling continues to bless my life, my work in this season is almost through. Other projects have begun to fill my days with activity like writing books and teaching about sex and intimacy in marriage, traveling, and time to read! I also find myself learning more stuff about computers and technology than I ever imagined, or ever wanted to know! I can’t even remember the last time I thought I was bored!

So, in a nutshell I’d say: I’m a Christian, happily married, mother of five, grandmother of six, friend, confidante, reader, author, teacher, traveler, homemade breadmaker, mentor, and “yet to be determined” kinda gal.

Shawn, Melody, Faith, Hunter (L) and Connor (R)

Hi! My name is Faith and I’ve been married to my husband, Shawn, for 12 years. We have two wild and crazy sons, Hunter and Connor. Then in 2008, I finally got to add some more pink to our household when little Melody joined our family.

In the words of our son, Hunter, his daddy is “a computer genius.” As a web developer by day and all around computer-fixer-upper in other moments, Hunter’s assessment is pretty accurate.

As a stay-at-home mom, I do my best to juggle homeschooling along with helping to run a household of 10, all while working a part-time job from home and developing my website at Minimalist at Home.

In closing, we want to welcome you here as we all learn more about multi-generational living. We invite you to make comments on our posts, email us with suggestions and questions, and benefit from what you will discover through the pages of this blog.

And who knows? Maybe you will become a multi-generational household, too! :)
